The Unhappy Ending Project

Unhappy Ending is a project depicting the morphology of a heartbreak and the structures of torment brought on by the collapse of love and its related epiphanies. It maps the pain of a breakup, narrating an emotional journey across the void of a broken heart and a search for rebirth, which that void invariably induces. The project started in 2020 with a book: Unhappy Ending. Poems for the Broken/Hearted that comprises poems by Ania Malinowska and gouaches by Pola Dwurnik, resonating various locations – from New York to Katowice to Warsaw to an American desert – where the poems and drawings came to be. It later developed into an exhibition of Pola’s art (sponsored and hosted by Krupa Gallery), and into an improvised jazz recital with live poetry, and music composed by bassist Kamila Drabek who joined the original duo in 2021.

Far from the imagery of drama, traditionally associated with the topos of lost love, the project playfully dignifies unhappy endings by means of words, sounds, images and personal stories.

Unhappy Ending to projekt poświęcony morfologii złamanego serca i epifaniom rozstania, który niewzniośle mapuje etapy i struktury cierpienia po rozpadzie miłości. Projekt powstał na bazie poetyckiego artbooka Unhappy Ending. Poems for the Broken/Hearted  z wierszami Ani Malinowskiej i guaszami Poli Dwurnik, który powstał na przestrzeni czterech lat w różnych miejscach na świecie: od Nowego Jorku, przez Katowice, Warszawę po amerykańską pustynię. W 2021 roku, projekt przyjął formę wystawy prac Poli Dwurnik pt. Unhappy Ending (Krupa Gallery we Wrocławiu) by następnie przeobrazić się w improwizowany jazz-performans ilustrowany muzyką kontrabasistki Kamili Drabek.

Projekt opowiada podróż przez bezdroża pustki i rozpaczy, śledząc pościg za sensem i odczarowaniem doświadczenia utraty. Stroni przy tym od gatunkowej dramy, z uczuciem i czcią traktując zaniedbany topos nieszczęśliwego zakończenia.
